It was late when I started so I had my head torch on pretty much all the way. I couldn't risk injury so again more of a fast walk than a run, though the last couple of miles are very smooth so I ran those back to the car. No rain this time, but in cloud for the upper half. Route finding was mostly ok, but over the bare rock sections it was very easy to go wrong so I had to back track sometimes. Didn't see a single other person at all. It was windy and cold on the summit (which I had a little trouble finding in the cloud!). I went up the pyg and down the miners track.

First time ever up this route - the path was obvious for most of the way, just a bit vague on the plateau / downhill before the summit. Again wet, with more rain than pen y fan this morning. Summit was in cloud again, and half way up I got cold so stopped to put gloves and hat on (was already in full waterproofs). Stopped at the top for several minutes in the shelter to put my black mammut insulsted layer on as knew it would be cold coming down. Not so much a run as a fast walk, not knowing the route at all, but I did run the flatter bits when I could.

Only the tinyest bits of snow and ice, nothing to slow me down. No wind either, but very foggy in places so tricky to see terrain for fast moving. Set off literally dead last, caught up with the race leader on the first hill, ran with him for a mile maybe, to just beneath the first saddle then I was all on my own for the rest. I kept looking behind expecting to see lights but in the end 2nd place finished 29 minutes behind! Slightly different route this year too, we didn't go up corn ddu (due to the mist/fog?), so less elevation gained but slightly longer route. The very steep climb up from the resevoir was as boggy as last year, but they've built a rock path from the top downwards, which I found maybe half way up and that turned a sludgy climb into a staircase which will have helped too.

I set off at a good pace and was quickly in third place (I was number 141). Had to climb over gates, climb over hay stacks, then plunged into a pond and had to properly swim 25 meters or so, bloody cold. Then more running through gorse/brambles/nettles, before having to go under some barbed wire - I didn't keep my arse down and ripped my shorts twice and cut my backside. Then another pond swim, and then under logs with my face fully in the mud - shit got in my eyes etc. Rinse and repeat a bit. We at the front went the wrong way amd had to back track, so I was now in fourth place. Up a steep slate path and under more mud trunks. The guy at the front (who'd gone past as we went the wrong way) didn't know which way to go so wasted his efforts running up and then down a field, before we all went the wrong way. 2 final skips full of muddy water and hay and I was over the finish line in third. Was supposed to be 4.6 miles but I followed the 2 or 3 people ahead of me and we went the wrong way and finished a bit short.  They had a big cattle trough full of hot water so we got into that to wash some mud off, but it stung like crazy, my legs were red raw with gashes and scratches.

Started off up a steep tarmac road then turned offroad up a hill. Single file at the start so forced to walk (luckily) but once on top there was room to pass people. Once we got to the summit we turned right and ran straight down the side of the hill - no path, just straight down. It was then muddy round the bottom before clibing back up (had to walk bits, too knackered). Going back down was steep and muddy - the XTalons were a good choice. There was a flat bit along the taff trail and then a long long climb back up to the top, again I had to walk a lot of it, and then a final run down to the finish. Very enjoyable! Only cost £5 too.

The ground however was extremely muddy, worse than the previous run. Had to run through big muddy puddles so legs were covered in mud and feet were wet, but I wore sealskin socks with the Innov8 shoes and my feet were fine (they were wet when I changed but warm and clean, and not white. Wore cycling leg warmers (which did slowly work their way down my legs so I had to pull them up a couple of times), Nike shorts, Adli white compression top and Rab vaporlight blue top. Also had thin black gloves and white running cap. Was very comfortable for the whole race. The weather could have turned nasty (it did blow very hard  with slushy hail 5 minutes after I finished) so I nearly wore my new OMM black waterproof smock, but glad I didnt as I think I would have been too hot. I possibly set off too fast at the start, and it was hard all the way round. After a few kms we settled into our positions, but slowly people overtook me. I traded places with an older guy several times but in the end he beat me by 30+ seconds. We had to go up the steep muddy/rocky hill we'd come down last time, and everyone walked, it really was steep and hard work, and the hr couldnt recover. I got a stitch at the top on the second lap and it took a while for that to go. By that point I was knackered and was happy just to finish.

Hilly (up) from the start (possibly went out a little fast), then down, then back up, then some superbly techy muddy steep rocky off-path stuff between 3km and 4km, and a final 1.5ish km of flatish grass to finish the lap (2 lap race). The first lap was hard, but the 2nd climb of the second lap was brutally slow, felt like I was barely moving, but no-one overtook me so everyone was struggling by then. Caught a group in the last 2km's, but at the very end had nothing left and they all sprinted over the line ahead of me. Definately not as fit as I was last year, my breathing and legs both suffered from 6 weeks off with bad knee. Shoes were brilliant. So many other unners were slipping and a few fell over, but I never slipped once - the grip on the wet/muddy grass was briliant - very good choice (but £95!).  Dan then did his first ever run - 300m (my gps on my wrist reckoned a bit more, I ran beside him) and came 6th out of 15. He did start crying 3 quartes of the way round but he never stoped running and proudly wore his medal all day at the zoo afterwards. His offical time was 2:54

Tough start to the run up a steep hill, really gets the hr going from the start. Trails are perfect, dump, very rare muddy section, lush green wild garlic and bluebells everywhere. Got a little unsure of where I was at one point, round the back - I was expecting the quarry on my left but it never appeared so I cut back into the woods. Would have been fine staying on the fire road but much prefer the woddland trails. No probs during the run but now afterwards my left foot is very tender if I load it a certain way, must have strained something a little. Need to do more trail runs! Need to find the good paths in these woods, and explore them more.

Tougher than I expected, still tired after yesterdays Black Mountains mtb ride The gps data is offset incorrectly for the first half mile.

My run was an out and back aparts from the final mile which is correctly shown on the other side of the train track. A tough climb today, very slow, very wet, but not cold at all. An OK run.

I wasn't killing myself going 100%, just taking it nice and easy. Several gates etc to stop for too.  The 'bluebells' section (from MTB rides) was extremely slippery, had to go at walking pace. Someone has built 105 steps up/down the hillside. The route came out halfway down but I ran up to the top just to see (more hills) and then all the way down them. Wore shorts and Rab Vapor Lite top (and socks with mt110's). Was comfortably warm, sometimes a bit sweaty. Feet got cold every time a puddle washed into the shoes but they quickly stopped feeling cold after each dunking.  The following day my right calf is quite sore - any walking causes quite a bit of pain. Must have over-stretched it jumping puddles or landing in deep mud perhaps?
Trail - 20121020 Trail run - Southerndown 20 Oct 12 12:43 39:00 3.744 5.76 10:25 155 172 9:40 264view on os maps 9:40  11:16  12:11  7:51 New Balance MT110 A very scenic, but very tough run! A lot of climbing and descending, thin off-camber paths, rocky sections, 100-odd steps, and 2 ladders (one 10 rungs, one 30 rungs) to get down to the beach at the turn around point. I had to walk a little bit after climbing the ladders back up, totally knackered. I'll definately do this run again. (though I wont miss the left turn shortly after the ladders next time. No pain, no problems. Time it right (maybe 2 hours either side of low tide?) and a nice run along the beach at the ladders would be possible.
Trail - 20120929 Trail run - Garth Hill 29 Sep 12 14:34 29:58 2.929 5.86 10:14 150 169 9:47 229view on os maps 9:47  11:43  9:07 New Balance MT110 A tough run up the Garth Hill. From the parking spot it only took 5 minutes to get to the top, so I ran east along the top until it started descending and turned right and ran down a steep hill to a nice spot with a great view, then followed the path down to the road. Several sets of rock steps kept things interesting. At the road I could have run 0.5km along the road to finish the loop (and probably do another) but decided to turn around and retrace my syeps, so that I didnt have any road miles at all. The initial climb was tough but I 'ran' it all; some of the descents were really pretty steep so I plodded down them ungracefully (dry though, so no slipping). On the return leg the climb from the road was vough and had me walking some bits, I was breathing extremely hard and slobbering everywhere. Some steep bits I just couldnt run at all. Overall a good run, with some tough challenges and some technical singletrack - I'll do it again.
Trail - 20120906 Trail run - Pentwyn pool woods 06 Sep 12 13:34 18:04 2.038 6.77 8:52 156 173 8:29 67view on os maps 8:29  9:16  8:08 New Balance MT110 A quick run before my swim - wanted to do about two miles, in the new mt110 (only done one previous run in them sofar). I didnt wear any socks to see how it felt.. fine, no rubbing or sore points, but crikey, when your foot lands in a muddy puddle its instantly cold and wet! First mile was on grassy fields so quite quick for a trail run, but then I randomly ran around some woods which slowed things right down. Had to climb over falled trees, jump over things, even used stepping stones across the stream near the end of the run. Good fun, and a good workout too (two steepish climbs in the second half too, good to get the hr up). Toes were very muddy when I finished (but got nice and clean in the pool).

We took the boys up to the bluebell woods and while they went for a walk with Charlotte I headed off for a 2 to 3 mile (30 min ish) run. I set off following a path we know and was straight into the woods and a bit of a climb. It got better after a while as it went deeper into woods with proper roots to negotiate and trees to dodge. I made the route up after that, and started heading back when I was ready. I knew there was a great mtb trail along the side of the quarry so ran that. Great fun, with some pretty steep (but very short) sections, which seemed steeper when running than biking. One section very nearly had me off my feet, I only just managed to stay upright as I ran down the steep muddy slippy hill. Hard pack and soft gooey mud underfoot. I wore some old Asda trainers with no grip whatsoever and was slipping about all over the place.. great excuse for some new 'trail' shoes (ended up with some New Balance mt110's for £39).
